Looking for an alternative to the traditional burger — maybe one that’s good for you, packs plenty of plant-based protein, but doesn’t sacrifice flavor? This gluten-free veggie burger recipe from A.Vogel features quinoa and veggies, contains all the essential amino acids, is a great source of B vitamins, and, thanks to the quinoa, is also a good source of protein. Talk about a keeper!
Gluten-Free Vegan Quinoa Burger
Ingredients
- 1 cup quinoa
- 2 shallots, finely chopped
- 1 clove of garlic, crushed
- 2 tsp paprika
- ½ tsp red chili flakes
- 2 sprigs fresh rosemary, chopped
- 1 sweet potato, chopped into small chunks
- Herbed Sea Salt Original seasoning salt
- Black pepper, to season
- 2 tsp olive oil
- Buns (be sure to choose g-free ones if you’re eschewing gluten!)
- Burger toppings as desired
Directions
- Boil the quinoa, until tender, approximately 15 minutes.
- Briefly saute the shallots and garlic.
- Boil the sweet potato, then mash.
- In a large bowl combine quinoa, shallots and garlic with the herbs, spices and sweet potato mash. Mix well.
- Form the mixture into small patties.
- Fry the patties for three minutes on each side.
- Serve on buns, if you like, with desired toppings. Or put the patty on a salad, or simply enjoy it on its own!
Now, here’s the million dollar question. When it comes to a vegetarian burger, do you prefer one that mimics a burger made with beef? Or are you more into something that’s considered a burger due to its shape and ability to be eaten on a bun, even if it’s not exactly “meaty”? I tend to prefer the latter, like the recipe above, or like this old favorite of mine. But as long as there’s a veg option, I’m usually pretty happy! —Kristen
